What are signs of gum disease?

Recognizing the signs of gum disease is important since untreated gum disease can lead to tooth loss and may impact your overall health. Gum disease is a common oral health condition that affects the tissues supporting the teeth.

The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis, which is mild and often reversible with proper care. Recognizing the symptoms of the early stages of gum disease increases the chances of reversing it.

A persistent bad breath that developed due to bacteria cannot be ignored. This is called halitosis. Bacteria built up under the gum lines are creating this problem. If your gums are tender and feel sensitive when touched and when eating, bacteria is also the culprit. Gingivitis will cause your gums to become red, swollen, and darker in color. Healthy gums are a light pink color. Another early warning of gum disease is bleeding when brushing or flossing.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis. At this stage, halitosis may worsen as bacteria multiply. This bad breath is not caused by food, but by periodontitis. Regular cleaning methods will not reverse the disease at this point. Gums begin to pull away from the teeth, making teeth appear longer. The roots of your teeth might also begin to be exposed. The pockets between the teeth and gums will get deeper, trapping food particles and bacteria. At this point, teeth may become sensitive to hot or cold temperatures due to exposed roots.

In advanced stages, severe periodontitis can cause significant damage to your gums and teeth. Loosening or shifting teeth may occur as the bone supporting the teeth deteriorates, and teeth may become unstable or move out of alignment. These changes can cause changes in your bite. In severe cases, teeth might start to fall out.

You will also experience pain while chewing. Chewing may become painful due to tissue and bone loss. Receding gums will also cause pain while you are eating. If you notice pus between your gums and teeth, you have an infection, and this will require immediate dental attention.

Regular dental cleaning, proper brushing and flossing, and avoiding smoking can significantly reduce your risk. It is important to consult a dentist immediately if you notice any of these symptoms. If you ignore the early signs of gingivitis, it can progress into a serious condition. Recognizing signs such as bleeding gums, swelling, bad breath, and gum recession will help you keep the problem under control. Once the disease progresses, the interventions will be more complicated and expensive.

If you pay attention to the early signs, the condition might be reversible.
