Implant Supported Dentures
Rockwall & Paris, Texas
While conventional dentures limit your functionality, require constant maintenance, frequently shift, and can be painful to wear, implant supported dentures provide greater stability because they are anchored to your jawbone with dental implants, which create a more stable and secure solution that eliminates the hassles associated with conventional dentures. Rather than replacing one individual tooth, implant supported dentures can replace multiple teeth at once. Although the cost of getting implant supported dentures is higher than other treatment options, like a regular denture, due to the number of implants that are required, they also provide a better solution for patients who want an effective bite and a comfortable, natural looking smile.
At Northeast Texas Periodontal Specialists, we offer a range of implant-based solutions for missing teeth, including implant supported dentures. If you are missing teeth and would like to learn more about whether implant supported dentures or another implant-based solution is right for you, please refer to the following. Consultation & Process
During your initial examination, we will use a dental CT (cone beam CT) scanner to produce a high-quality 3-D images of your bone, nerve pathways, soft tissues and teeth in one single scan, which will allows for more precise treatment planning. These images will also allow us to determine whether you are a viable candidate for implant supported dentures, and/or if preparatory procedures such as a bone graft and/or tooth extraction will be necessary. These images will allow us to determine where the implants should be placed and will be used in conjunction with a special software to create a surgical guide to ensure the implants are precisely inserted into the pre-planned position. Once we have completed this evaluation, we will share the results with you and offer our professional opinion on what treatment option we feel is best for you and why, and answer any questions you may have.
Patients considering implant supported dentures will often need additional preparatory procedures performed first, such as a bone graft to increase the thickness or volume of the jawbone in order to support the implant. By placing the graft material into the implant site, it will regenerate new bone and act as a platform or scaffold for the bone to form around. Over time, this graft material will remodel, and healthy bone will remain in its place. If a bone graft is necessary and conditions allow for it, we will place your implant immediately with the bone graft, but in many cases, it will be necessary to wait for the bone to regenerate first then place the dental implant at a later time.
Once the bone graft has healed, a follow up appointment will be scheduled for implant placement. First, we will administer a local anesthetic to ensure you do not feel any discomfort. Once you are numbed and comfortable, the procedure will begin with a small incision being made in your gums. Next, we will use a Piezoelectric ultrasonic surgical instrument to prepare the site where your implant will be placed. This technology uses ultrasonic vibrations to precisely prepare the bone for implant placement without affecting the nerves, blood vessels, skin, or gum.
Once the sites have been prepared and the implants placed, we will position your temporary restoration, which will be worn while you undergo the healing process. Frequently, your temporary will have a temporary liner (“soft liner”) placed inside of it to act as a cushion between the temporary and the gum tissues as they are healing. It will take several months for the titanium posts to fully integrate with your jawbone. Once this process of “osseointegration” is complete, you will return to our office for clearance for your permanent restoration, the implant supported denture. After testing your implant supported denture to ensure that your bite looks and feels comfortable and aligns with the adjacent teeth, your implant supported dentures will be complete!

Benefits of Treatment
One of the biggest benefits of getting implant supported dentures is the improved aesthetic appearance of your smile, but as important, if not more, is the preservation of your oral and systemic health. When teeth are missing and left untreated for too long, the jawbone will begin to deteriorate, decreasing the support of your lips and cheeks causing you to appear older than you are. Other benefits you will enjoy following your implant supported dentures procedure include:
- Improves your ability to chew foods, which results in better digestion
- Easier to clean and requires less maintenance
- Significantly more comfortable
- Decreases likelihood of gum infection and mouth sores
- Improves your ability to talk and will not move around or fall out like dentures
- Permanent solution, provided you follow good oral hygiene habits
