Wisdom Teeth Removal
Rockwall & Paris, Texas

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last permanent teeth to develop, typically emerging during the late teens or early twenties. Wisdom teeth removal is a common dental procedure, particularly when these teeth do not have enough room to grow in properly. While some people have wisdom teeth that emerge normally and never cause problems, others may experience pain, swelling, infection, or damage to neighboring teeth. Wisdom teeth can also become impacted, meaning they are unable to fully emerge through the gums because they are blocked by surrounding bone, gum tissue, or other teeth.

Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed. If the teeth are healthy, properly positioned, and easy to keep clean, removal may not be necessary. However, extraction may be recommended when wisdom teeth cause recurring infections, tooth decay, gum disease, or other complications. In some cases, removal may also be considered when there is a significant risk of future problems. The decision should be based on an examination of your teeth, dental imaging, and a discussion of the potential benefits and risks of treatment.

At Northeast Texas Periodontal Specialists, we can help you determine whether wisdom teeth removal is necessary for you or your child. If you are experiencing pain, swelling, or other symptoms associated with your wisdom teeth, we encourage you to schedule an evaluation. Wisdom Teeth Removal
Evaluation & Procedure

The process for removing wisdom teeth will largely depend on whether your wisdom teeth are fully or partially impacted, and whether your wisdom teeth have grown in straight, backward, at an angle, or upside down. Prior to extracting your tooth, we will administer a topical anesthetic at the injection site to ensure you do not experience any initial sensations. We also offer several different dental sedation options, including oral and IV sedation, to ensure you are calm and comfortable throughout the wisdom teeth removal procedure.

Once you are numbed and comfortable, the wisdom teeth removal process will begin. Unlike traditional methods for extracting teeth that involve moving and rotating the tooth until it dislodges, which in turn can damage the surrounding tissues and causes swelling to occur, we use Piezosurgery to help to reduce trauma and precisely remove your tooth. By taking this approach, more bone is preserved, the extraction process is far less traumatic, and you will have a faster healing period.

We will either remove all four wisdom teeth in one procedure, or remove your wisdom teeth one or two at a time over different visits, depending on what seems best based on your specific needs and treatment preferences. Removal of your wisdom teeth can be completed in as little as one hour or take several hours to complete, depending on the nature of your case and how many wisdom teeth are being removed.

Following removal of your wisdom teeth, you may need to arrange for a ride home if dental sedation is administered. We recommend this ride home be a friend or family member to assist you in getting to and from your appointment.  It is normal to experience some pain and swelling following this procedure, but this can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain-relieving medication like Ibuprofen and application of ice to the swollen or tender area for ten- to fifteen-minute intervals. If pain medication or antibiotics are prescribed, take as prescribed until your prescription is done. It is also important to rest as much as possible following your procedure.

Wisdom Teeth Removal
Complications & Discomfort

Although some people may not experience any issues related to their wisdom teeth, many others will experience the discomfort of having impacted wisdom teeth or have to deal with issues that can develop when wisdom teeth are not removed, such as crowding, due to there not being enough for the molars to develop, or being at an increased risk of developing periodontal disease, because wisdom teeth are more difficult to clean. Impacted wisdom teeth can also cause a range of issues to develop, such as chronic halitosis, difficulty opening your mouth, pain and swelling at your jaw, and gums that swell or bleed. Though unlikely, wisdom teeth that are not removed also increase the possibility of a tumor developing in the mouth, due to a cyst forming in the jawbone.

Wisdom Teeth Removal
Costs associated

The cost of wisdom teeth removal will largely depend on whether any additional procedures are being performed, what type of dental sedation is used, how many wisdom teeth are being removed, the difficulty of removing your wisdom teeth, and your dental insurance plan. It is also important to factor in the cost of the initial visit and any follow-up appointments that may be necessary. Finally, you may need to purchase antibiotics as well as pain-relieving medication for after the procedure.

For patients who are covered under a dental insurance plan, although we are not in-network, we will gladly help prepare and file your claim to ensure you receive your maximum reimbursement. Payment is due in full on the day of treatment. We accept cash, check, Visa, Discover, Mastercard, and American Express. If you are concerned about the cost of receiving treatment, please know that we offer our patients Compassionate Finance, which offers a variety of payment solutions with fixed interest rates and manageable monthly payments, and CareCredit®, which offers 24-month payment plans with zero interest, as well as low-interest financing for 24-60 months.

Advanced 3D imaging makes treatment faster and less invasive

We use high-tech digital X-rays and a 3D cone beam CT scanner to get detailed images of your teeth, gums, and jaw structure. With these images, we precisely plan your implant placement ahead of the appointment for surgery. We can then place your implants quickly and with no or minimal incisions.

Revolutionary
Non-surgical gum treatment using the Perioscope

We treat most cases of moderate to severe gum disease completely non-surgically by using the Perioscope. The Perioscope is a revolutionary, tiny camera that enables us to see deeply buried plaque and calculus deposits that, before the Perioscope, would have required exploratory surgery to see. Using the Perioscope, we thoroughly remove these deposits with our scaling instruments.
