Wilckodontics
Rockwall & Paris, Texas
Traditional orthodontic treatment can be a lengthy process, especially for patients who require significant adjustments to the alignment of their teeth. For individuals interested in completing orthodontic treatment in less time, Wilckodontics may offer an effective solution. Also known as Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO), Wilckodontics combines specialized periodontal surgery with conventional orthodontic treatment to help teeth move into their desired positions more quickly.
The procedure involves carefully modifying the bone surrounding the teeth to stimulate the body's natural healing response, which temporarily increases the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. Bone grafting may also be performed to help increase the thickness of the supporting alveolar bone. Wilckodontics is performed in coordination with your orthodontist and is intended to complement, rather than replace, braces or other orthodontic appliances.
At Northeast Texas Periodontal Specialists, we work closely with your orthodontist to determine whether Wilckodontics is appropriate for your individual treatment needs. To learn more or schedule a consultation, contact our Rockwall office at (972) 771-8640 or our Paris office at (903) 785-4832.

Evaluation & Procedure
Before recommending Wilckodontics, we will conduct a thorough evaluation of your teeth, gums, and supporting bone structure. We will also coordinate with your orthodontist to review your treatment plan and determine whether the procedure can safely and effectively support your orthodontic goals.
During the procedure, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the treatment area and minimize discomfort. Oral or IV sedation may also be available for patients who experience dental anxiety or would benefit from additional relaxation during treatment.
Once the treatment area is numb, small, carefully controlled cuts are made in the outer layer of the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth. This process, known as corticotomy, stimulates a temporary increase in bone remodeling activity, allowing teeth to move more readily in response to orthodontic forces. Depending on your treatment needs, bone grafting material may also be placed to help increase the thickness of the bone supporting your teeth.
Following the procedure, some swelling, tenderness, and minor bleeding are normal during the initial recovery period. We will provide detailed postoperative instructions, including recommendations for managing discomfort, maintaining oral hygiene, and protecting the surgical area while it heals. If sedation is administered, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home. Any prescribed medications should be taken according to our instructions.

Benefits of Procedure
Wilckodontics offers several potential benefits for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, particularly those who would like to reduce the time required to achieve a straighter smile. By stimulating the body's natural bone remodeling process, this procedure can make certain types of orthodontic tooth movement more efficient while providing additional support for the surrounding bone when grafting is performed.
Depending on your individual needs, potential benefits of Wilckodontics include:
- Reduced orthodontic treatment time: May accelerate tooth movement and shorten certain phases of treatment.
- Improved bone support: Bone grafting may increase the thickness of the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth.
- Enhanced treatment flexibility: May allow certain tooth movements that would otherwise be more difficult because of limitations in the supporting bone.
- Reduced need for tooth extractions: May help some patients avoid extractions that would otherwise be considered as part of their orthodontic treatment.
- Coordinated treatment: Combines periodontal and orthodontic care to address tooth alignment and supporting bone structure.
- Improved smile alignment: Supports the orthodontic process of moving teeth into healthier, more functional positions.
One of the most significant advantages of Wilckodontics is its potential to shorten orthodontic treatment. However, the amount of time saved varies based on the complexity of the case, the orthodontic movements required, and the patient's individual response to treatment. Wilckodontics is a surgical procedure and carries risks, including swelling, discomfort, infection, and possible changes to the surrounding gum or bone tissue. A thorough evaluation is necessary to determine whether its potential benefits outweigh these risks.

Am I A Good Candidate?
The cost of Wilckodontics varies depending on the complexity of your treatment, the number of teeth involved, the extent of any necessary bone grafting, and whether sedation is used. Additional costs may include your initial consultation, diagnostic imaging, and follow-up appointments. Because Wilckodontics is performed in conjunction with orthodontic care, orthodontic treatment fees are generally separate from the periodontal surgical fees.
At Northeast Texas Periodontal Specialists, we understand that the cost of treatment is an important consideration.
